Sea of Faith (SCM Classics reissue)

SCM have reissued as part of the ‘SCM Classics’ series Don Cupitt, Sea of Faith with a new foreword by George Patterson SCM Press, September 2003; £14.99, ISBN: 0334029279 (Sea of Faith was originally published by the BBC in 1984) George Patterson writes in the foreword of two different groups who were ‘touched’ by the book: those ‘hanging on in there in church life’ and those who had left organised religion but who ‘still felt the pulse of unanswered religious questions’. He also reflects on the development of Don Cupitt’s thinking since 1984, noting that Cupitt has neither remained an academic insider where ‘like talks only to like’, nor has he simply hitched ‘a ride on the coat-tails of one or other secular movements...his path of thinking has been his own.’ sof 62 November 2003 It seems a shame that the Network was not mentioned in the closing flyleaf of the book, though, for if today there are not so many ‘hanging on in there in church life’ the fact that there continues to be an audience for such a book shows that there may well be people who, reading this work for the first time, might still feel the pulse of unanswered religious questions.

They might not know that there is a community of ongoing exploration of these from such a perspective as the SoF network shares.
