John’s Gospel: The Unauthorised Version

To say that God was at the beginning is to say that the drive towards meaning has been there from the beginning.

Everything created can be meaningful and nothing was made to be meaningless. The emergence of life was the drive towards meaning and from life emerged human enlightenment.

The light of meaning dispelled the darkness of absurdity, and meaningless chaos has not been able to overcome it...

Every person may share in the enlightening truth which meaning brings to the world it has made. The world always remains potentially meaningful even though many fail to recognise it.

But those who have found meaning, and who entrust themselves to it, have been enabled to become the children of God.

It may be objected that freedom, and therefore meaning in life, are luxuries available only to citizens of relatively fortunate communities. The poor and the oppressed, lacking freedom, have little opportunity to choose and create meaning. That is unhappily true.
