Of Japanese origin, the highly stylised haiku "is meant to communicate the experience of a sudden insight into the human condition, an unexpected burst of exquisite heightened consciousness, or a flash of new wisdom".
The haiku on our front cover is from Margaret Chisman's The Weekend Haiku Book (£3 from Margaret Chisman, The Bungalow, Tring Station, Herts HP23 5QX).
