The Sea of Faith has ebbed it seems; We're proud to say there's no outside. The age-old stories are but dreams; There's nothing that resists the tide. And we are flotsam on the sea; We're not the same as yesterday. I can't be sure that I am me, Tomorrow I may float away. As I compose the words I write To others they say something new. No meanings are so water-tight That we are certain what is true. In this elastic moving scene God is as changeable as man; What will be is not what has been, And there is no eternal plan. Yet there's a power in which we trust, A power of love that others share. In metaphor we talk to you, Our hearts acknowledge you are there. We find the strength to live our lives. To help us overcome despair. Through change and chance you give us peace Because we meet you everywhere.
