This session of the In Conversation series took place on Wednesday 21st May. Joan Green introuce the topic of ‘Free Speech’

Free speech is usually referred to as a fundamental right that allows individuals to express thoughts, opinions and ideas without fear of censorship or retaliation.

However there are limitations and balancing these rights with the need to protect individuals and communities from harm is complex.

Joan looked at how the concept has evolved from Greek philosophy to the present day Human Rights Act and then considered the case against free speech by drawing on the views of Brian Leiter, a political philosopher at the University of Chicago.

Finally there is the question of whether free speech today is a crucial tool for societal progress and exchange of ideas or has become something used by a wealthy elite to entrench their power.
