‘This paper explores Don Cupitt’s religious non-realism and its potential to reframe engagement with religion beyond theism and atheism. Cupitt opens space for meaningful participation in practices, ethics, and community without metaphysical claims. One strand, fictionalism, interprets religion as a chosen fiction, which can be non-realist or agnostic.

Agnostic fictionalism fosters hope through epistemic humility—the recognition of human cognitive limits and the impossibility of certainty. I outline a spectrum of positions: non-realism, fictionalism, traditional realism, and propose minimalist realism embracing humility.

Finally, I consider how these perspectives might inform global traditions like animism and astrology.’
