Back in the year 2000, David Boulton published his ’10 Hypotheses’ in the then Sea of Faith magazine (July 2000, pp 12-13 – https://sofn.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/SOF42.pdf and also attached document).

At the time, it provoked much discussion – sometimes heated.  A quarter of a century on, we wondered if it still carries the same power to stir up deep thought and nuanced conversation.

The intention is that all of us attending will have had the chance to familiarise ourselves with the ‘10 Hypotheses’ along with David’s original introduction, in which he invites all of us to: “discard what doesn’t hold good, improving whatever may seem useful”.  The 10 Hypotheses were always intended as a starting point rather than and end game – what do you think?

As part of our conversation this coming October evening, we invited David Boulton to comment on how he now feels about these ’10 Hypos’, twenty-five years later.

Is David still happy with them?  Would he change anything?

Do these ‘Hypos’ still speak to our changed or still changing religious landscape?
